Equally influenced by the male members of his family, Kaulitz created this series to reconcile his place in the middle of two towering figures throughout his life — his father, Dale Edward Kaulitz (1913-1977), and his son, Guerin Damon Kaulitz (1967-1996). These large-format pieces are largely presented as triptychs, with a sculptural or multi-media element alongside the paintings on canvas. Caught in the Middle was first presented as a solo exhibition at the Anchorage Museum in 2003.
